Shimo VPN

MacOS VPN Client – PPTP

“Prepare for removal of PPTP VPN before you upgrade to iOS 10 and macOS Sierra and beyond”

“Even though PPTP protocol is still available on iOS 9 and earlier or OS X El Capitan and earlier, we don’t recommend that you use it for secure, private communication”
— Apple

The above are two statements from Apple's website. I know this is old news now, and this is an old post from a pervious tech website I contributed to but still relevant today as this VPN option hasn’t returned, with the world now working from home its fitting.

Sierra has been about since Autumn 2016 but the removal of PPTP VPN Protocol still stands. I’ve become a little luckier of late and been able to BYOD into work, allowing me to use the Mac daily and not result in a mental breakdown by 11 from fighting with Windows. We have a few off-site locations which I’m required to access and VPN in to, now on Windows this was an easy task, seeing how Microsoft hasn’t disabled the most used protocol.

After a bit of faffing with other app’s and trying to create a free workaround, I stumped up the €49 for the Shimo App, it’s one-click connect has been worth the money.

The application lives in either your dock or menu bar, you can have both locations if you wish but I choose dock. The set up of a VPN is super easy and straightforward, and the connection speeds are rapid.

Setting up a new VPN is very easy and you can set up multiple types of VPN protocols and accounts.

After you select your protocol click create, and enter the relevant details.

Shimo VPN is a low-cost application which helps further to bring the Apple Mac users into the Windows world and keep the fight going, the next big task is working out how to allow pass-through VPN PPTP connections on the iOS devices – Watch this space.
